Harry Owanaba failed WAEC three times and also failed JAMB three times. It took him six years after secondary school to gain admission into the University. As a student in secondary school, he was intelligent but lacked the required discipline for Academic Success. He never had a reading plan or a study group that he was accountable to; procrastinated a lot, lacked concentration, slept a lot during classroom teaching, exam week were the worst days of his life; he didn’t even know how to ask questions in areas he didn’t understand and he never asked or answered a question in class throughout his days in school (the university, secondary and primary school).

However, something happened in his 200 level in the university that changed the trajectory of his study life. His uncle visited and asked how he does his studies; he explained. His uncle made him understand that he was studying the wrong way. He later gave him two hours training on how to study. Just by practicing the tips and strategies shared by his uncle that fateful afternoon, he graduated as one of the top students in his department

After graduation, he began to notice the rate of failure of students in classroom/promotional exams to National exams like (WAEC, NECO and JAMB) and to International exams. He was convinced that the same reason (poor study habits) he failed years ago is the same reason (poor study habits) these students were recording low grades.

Instead of staying at the corner and hoping that things get better, he decided to do something. He said to himself; if people in sports or business have coaches, why can’t students have coaches that would help them perform optimally in their academics. As a teacher, he knew that most teachers are doing a great job in the classroom but some students have issues that are not necessarily subject based that are negatively affecting what the teacher is trying to achieve in the classroom. So, he asked himself again, what are some of the challenges students are facing that hinder them from doing well in their academics. He listed those challenges and built courses that proffer solutions to them. This led to the launching of his Academic Coaching Program. The aim is to train them to achieve academic excellence and instill life skills they need to excel in the 21st century

He started having home meetings, seminars with students in schools, students’ conferences at event centres and churches. After a while, he discovered that the same reading challenges that some students had while in school had followed them to adulthood. This is how he launched his Speed Reading Program and started training private individuals that want to improve on their reading and corporate organization that like to promote a learning culture around their organization

Parents are not left out. Coach Harry observed that most parents do not understand that apart from paying school fees, they have other more important roles to play to ensure that their children excel academically. This led to him writing the book, “Your Child can be an Active Reader” and launching the “Raise a Reader Course”. He has used these avenues to equip parents with the requisite skills they need to instill a good reading culture in their children

Today, he is known as a well renowned Speed Reading Expert; training people from all walks of life to read books faster, understand better, remember more and execute aggressively. His mission is to raise lifelong committed learners. He believes that if he can inspire people to read, their lives will be transformed and the world will become a better place
